Point of Peace Summit - Conceptual Framework

Unignorable Messages: Alarms and Solutions

Nobel Peace Laureates and Informed Experts

The Summit aspires to advance the core concerns of the Nobel Peace Laureates and the informed experts, and at the same time it aspires to influence the processes of policy making, nationally and internationally, in order to make systemic change.

We will be focusing on three interconnected themes that demands urgent attention:

  1. Environment with a focus on climate change;
  2. Security with a focus on redefining security from ultimate weapons such as nuclear to human security and meeting human needs;
  3. Media with a focus on the challenges of informing the public on the unignorable messages that have been addressed the previous two days.

By focusing on the above themes, the summit seeks to emphasise the interconnection between the three and bringing to the fore the importance of taking a holistic approach to peace and stability.

The titles of the days are as follows:

  • 10 September Facing the Climate Challenge
  • 11 September Human Security beyond 9/11
  • 12 September The Challenge of Informing the Public

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), endorsed by heads of State at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 is a set of eight targets, including the target of halving extreme poverty by 2015. Since the world is now half-way to the target date, it is important to examine the progress in order to ensure that these vital goals are achieved sooner rather than later.

At the Summit, the Millennium Development Goals will be looked at each day in relation to the topics addressed that day.

This will, in addition to highlight the prospects of meeting the goals, elucidate the interconnectedness of the three topics, and how each affects the issue of human dignity and quality of life of the world’s populace.

In addition, there will be an opening ceremony the first day and a closing session day three.

The Crown Prince of Norway, Haakon Magnus, will be present at the opening ceremony.
